When Sunny was five years old, the family he had known his entire life welcomed a new puppy into their home. It quickly became clear that Sunny was not comfortable sharing his space with another dog, and soon after, he was surrendered to Midcoast Humane through no fault of his own.
Around the same time, George, an elderly widower for several years, was facing a loss of his own. His beloved dog and constant companion, Monica, had grown too sick to live comfortably, leading to the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye.
George quickly realized he needed another companion and came across Sunny while browsing adoptable dogs on our website. Something about Sunny felt familiar, reminiscent of the late dog who had helped him through the grief of losing his wife. George decided to take a chance and contacted our Edgecomb shelter.
After meeting Sunny and speaking with our staff, George brought him home. From the very first night, it was clear the match was meant to be. Sunny ran up the stairs, jumped onto the king-sized bed, and made himself right at home. More than a year later, everything is still going beautifully.
George recently shared how grateful he is to have Sunny to “restore the joy” in his life, and encourage others in our community to view Midcoast Humane as a source of such companionship. He hopes that his story will inspire others, especially those who may not normally give, to help make more happy endings possible.
Our fundraising goal is to secure 100 gifts of $50, turning $5,000 into $10,000 for “Sunny’s Fund” through a generous match.
