Community Cats

Do you need help altering your cat(s)? We can help!

Our Community Cats program is a grant-funded spay/neuter voucher program for cat owners and caretakers of feral cat colonies in our contracted towns. We work with veterinary clinics in our area to provide spay and neuter surgeries for cats of low-income households or cats that belong to a feral colony.  We can even help guide you in trapping your cats to make sure they get the medical attention they need!

Why Spay/Neuter?

There are numerous benefits to altering your cat. Altered cats are less likely to develop certain types of cancer, and in females, it reduces the risk for uterine infections. In males, neutering prevents spraying strong-smelling urine. Spaying and neutering also prevents unwanted litters of kittens and helps fight pet overpopulation.

How Does the Spay/Neuter Voucher Program Work?

Call Midcoast Humane at (207) 449-1366 x504 to find out if you qualify for the program. If you do, we’ll ask to meet with you to give you the voucher and provide you with a list of participating veterinary clinics that will provide the surgery.  After your appointment, the clinic will turn in your voucher to Midcoast Humane, and the shelter will pay the bill.

If You Feed a Group of Stray or Feral Cats…

This program is for you, too! Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) decreases stray and feral populations without harming the cats. Cats can be trapped with humane traps borrowed from Midcoast Humane, your Animal Control Officer, or several other local feline welfare groups. After their surgeries and vaccinations, the cats can return to their original location, healthier and with no more litters of unwanted kittens—not to mention less spraying, yowling, and fighting.

Last Litter Program

If you have a litter of kittens in addition to the mom cat, you can bring in the litter of kittens (or puppies), and we will spay and vaccinate mom and return her to you at no cost. When the babies are old enough, we’ll make sure they get everything they need and find them a loving new home! Call us for details at (207) 449-1366 x206 if you are in the Brunswick area, or (207) 449-1366 x303 if you are in the Edgecomb area.
