Public Assistance

At Midcoast Humane, we recognize that even the best, most responsible pet owners can find themselves facing financial hardship or unexpected challenges. Oftentimes, those challenges affect how people are able to care for their pets. To keep pets where they belong—with their families—Midcoast Humane offers a Public Assistance program. This initiative provides vital support to pet owners, helping them care for their animals so they can stay in the comfort and security of their homes.

This program has a limited amount of funding, and is only available for people who live in our contracted towns.

Last Litter Program

Pet owners who find themselves with an unplanned litter from a pregnant cat or dog can bring the litter of kittens or puppies to the shelter, and we will spay your female pet, update her vaccines, treat her for fleas and worms, microchip her, and return her to you at no cost. When the babies are old enough, we will make sure they get everything they need to thrive and find them a loving, new home.

For more information about this program, please call (207) 449-1366 x303 if you live in an area served by our Edgecomb Campus, or call (207) 449-1366 x206 if you live in an area served by our Brunswick Campus.

Community Cat Program

This program helps families with lower incomes get their cats spayed or neutered at a participating veterinary office. In addition to helping pet cats, this program also helps the caretakers of feral cat colonies by controlling overpopulation, which reduces the suffering of sick, homeless cats.

Public Pet Surgery Days

Having a pet spayed or neutered is important for so many reasons, but can be out of reach financially for many pet owners. We work with pet owners who have a fixed or lower income to be able to afford having their cats or dogs spayed or neutered by our Clinic team at a rate that is affordable and at a time that is convenient to them.

Low-Cost Wellness Clinics

Every month from March to December, Midcoast Humane holds low-cost wellness clinics to help people who cannot afford regular veterinary care access affordable vaccines and basic wellness services for their pets. Clinics take place in various locations throughout the 39 communities we serve, ensuring that people who live in more rural areas where transportation may be unreliable have access to affordable pet care.

To learn about Wellness Clinics as they are scheduled, please see the Event Calendar on our website. To see the services offered at the clinics along with their prices, please click here.

Pet Buddy Public Assistance

This program helps pet owners with low or fixed incomes get their pets into a local veterinary office in an urgent situation. This fund helps defray the cost for our neighbors struggling to afford one-time, unexpected medical expenses to avoid surrender or euthanasia of an otherwise healthy pet.

Pet Food Pantry

Both the Brunswick Campus and the Edgecomb Campus have a pet food pantry for pet owners who are having a hard time feeding their pets. Each year, we give out over 40,000lbs of free pet food, keeping animals fed and in their homes.
