As the holidays approach, you might be thinking that a new puppy or kitten would make a fantastic gift for someone in your life. We’re glad you’re thinking about adoption—there is no shortage of shelter animals in need of loving new homes!

Can pets be gifts?

Wouldn’t you like to bring an animal in need home for the holidays?

A new pet can be a wonderful addition to the family for the holidays, and at Midcoast Humane, we are honored to be a part of this special time in your family’s life. We will have dozens of puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats looking for homes at our upcoming Home for the Holidays adoption event. During Home for the Holidays, we’ll even hold on to your special future family member until Christmas Eve to surprise someone at home!

The adoption process during Home for the Holidays is the same as any other adoption at Midcoast Humane.  After you’ve come in and met your new furry family member, you’ll complete an adoption counseling session with one of our adoption counselors. We’ll make sure its a good fit on both sides. Please keep in mind that if you would like to bring home a furry friend as a gift, it must be within your immediate family/household, and the person who adopts the animal must be one of their primary caretakers. Adopting a pet is not a decision to make lightly. All too often, pets are given as gifts during the holidays to individuals who do not necessarily want a pet, or to people who are not prepared to own a pet.

We thank you for your thoughtfulness as you consider adding to your family. As always, remember that when you bring your pet home, they should be introduced to their new surroundings calmly and slowly. They have a lot of adjusting to do, and holidays can be chaotic!

If you would like to give the gift of a furry friend to someone outside of your household, such as a friend or extended family member, a gift certificate for adoption is an ideal solution. Gift certificates can be purchased at our Brunswick Campus at 30 Range Road during open hours.
