Longtime volunteer Blake Austin is a 2018 winner of News Center Maine’s 6 WHO CARE Award! Blake is just 15 years old – a Freshman at Brunswick High School – but has already been volunteering with Midcoast Humane for seven years. She began in elementary school, one of our youngest volunteers to-date!
Blake has volunteered doing just about every job at our shelter, from cleaning cages, working at adoption events, and assisting with Animal Camp, to fostering some of our more vulnerable shelter residents. She turned an unused room in her home into a “cattery” for cats and kittens in need of special foster care, spending her own money furnishing the room with cat warming pads, cat trees and cat condos. To date, Blake has fostered 95 cats and kittens! As an official Adoption Ambassador, Blake also helps find homes for the animals she fosters.
News Center Maine describes the award as “an opportunity to honor those volunteers that make a difference in our community… they build, teach, and they inspire. They are the people that go about their day never expecting a thank you for the things they do.”
We would like to give Blake a big THANK YOU from everyone at Midcoast Humane… including the animals! The 6 Who Care award is very well deserved. Blake has aspirations to become a veterinarian, and we couldn’t think of a better fit for our volunteer and friend. Congratulations, Blake!
