IRISH SETTERS WHO SUFFERED NEGLECT TO GO UP FOR ADOPTION AT MIDCOAST HUMANE
Dogs will be available for adoption after spending five months in the shelter’s care

May 29, 2024, Brunswick, ME — Midcoast Humane is delighted to announce that several Irish Setter dogs, rescued from a situation of severe neglect, are now available for adoption and ready to find loving homes.

On December 15, 2023, Midcoast Humane assisted the state of Maine’s Animal Welfare Program as they executed a search warrant at a property in New Sharon. Upon finding several animals in need of medical attention, Midcoast Humane brought nine of the removed dogs to the shelter’s Brunswick Campus for immediate medical care.

The dogs were severely underweight, matted, dirty and reeked from laying in their own waste. Many had other medical issues, including skin conditions, masses and respiratory illnesses. The Setters were treated over the course of several days, and as their conditions stabilized, many transitioned into foster homes, while others remained at the shelter under the direct supervision of the medical team.

“Whenever the state of Maine reaches out to request assistance, we do whatever we can to help,” stated Jess Townsend, Executive Director of Midcoast Humane. She continued, “Addressing cases of animal neglect is a moral imperative, and a community responsibility. Our partnership with the state ensures that vulnerable animals receive the care and attention they need and deserve.”

On May 20, the court overseeing the case resolved to permanently remove the Setters from their owner’s care. After five months of being in the shelter’s care, the six setters who are not being adopted by their foster families will be available for adoption on Thursday, May 30. The dogs have been spayed/neutered, are up to date on their vaccinations, and have been microchipped.

Director of Operations, Zach Fenoff, commented, “Witnessing the transformation of these Irish Setters has been truly gratifying. When they arrived at the shelter, they were in poor condition and exhibited signs of fear, anxiety and stress. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated veterinary team, staff, and fosters, the dogs are beginning to understand that humans can be trusted. We are excited to help these dogs find the loving homes that they’ve always deserved.”

Four of the dogs will be available for adoption at Midcoast Humane’s Brunswick Campus on Thursday, May 30. Prospective adopters are invited to visit the shelter at 5 Industrial Parkway in Brunswick on Thursday, May 30 when the doors open at 11am to meet the dogs onsite.
