As the holiday season approaches, we wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for your support throughout the year. Your compassion and generosity have been vital to our mission, and today, we’d love to share with you one of the many life-saving stories your support has made possible in 2024.
This past July, a beloved cat named Kini went missing from his home. Kini’s owner was distraught. Recently widowed, Kini had been a great source of comfort for her as she grieved. After four restless days, Kini returned home, but he had suffered severe injuries in his time away.
Kini’s owner promptly brought him to an emergency clinic, and found that she could not afford the emergency surgery Kini desperately needed. Faced with an impossible choice, she entrusted Kini to Midcoast Humane, determined to give him a chance at life.
Our team quickly stepped in. X-rays revealed two critical fractures—one in Kini’s back leg and another in a weight-bearing part of his pelvis. After careful evaluation, our veterinarian, Dr. Cote, and our dedicated medical team performed a life-saving leg amputation and prescribed eight weeks of crate rest to allow his fractured pelvis to heal. After the surgery, Kini was able to return to his grateful owner who worked with our medical team to make sure that he fully healed. His owner later wrote, “I will be forever grateful to Dr. Menolly Cote and Midcoast Humane for saving Kini’s life and returning him to me.”
Stories like Kini’s happen every day at Midcoast Humane. Because of kind supporters like you, we were able to give Kini—and approximately 3,500 other animals in 2024—a second chance. But there are many more animals in need. Your continued support means we can be there for the animals of mid-coast Maine and beyond, offering urgent care, comfort, and a path to loving homes. As you celebrate the season with your own pets, please consider making a special year-end gift. Your donation will provide food, shelter, medical care, and the warmth of human kindness to countless homeless animals who deserve a fresh start.
Please join us in making 2025 a year of hope and healing for animals in need.
With heartfelt thanks,
