In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis we are renewing our commitment to placing every available animal into a loving and permanent home. After consulting with animal welfare experts at the state and local levels, as well as reviewing all CDC guidance on best practices for safe interactions with others, Midcoast Humane is re-opening its adoption program by appointment only for dogs, cats and small animals. We believe that with people spending more time at home than ever, now is the perfect time to welcome a new animal into your home, ease the transition for the animal, and ensure that our recommended safe space of waiting two weeks before introducing the pet to people outside the home is met.
Because our first priority remains the health of our staff and animals, we have adapted our adoption process to ensure the safest conditions for our staff, animals and adopters.
You can start the process by viewing the dogs, cats and small animals available for adoption on our website. If there is an animal that you are interested in, please fill out a Pre-Adoption Survey. At this time, we cannot accept Surveys for animals that are not yet available for adoption (kittens in foster care for instance).
After submitting an online Pre-Adoption Survey, a member of our adoptions team will contact you to schedule an appointment to visit the shelter.
During the appointment, dog adopters will meet the animals in a safe space outside and will be asked to fill out forms online to eliminate the need to come in the building. Cats and small animals will be placed in crates and brought outside to meet adopters, who will then fill out forms online. The process has been carefully designed to minimize person-to-person contact, while ensuring a comprehensive screening process and a comfortable transition for our animals.
